Family Easter Activities

Image : http://www.flickr.com

When spring comes along, we have a celebration of renewal (we're also happy to get out of the house and shake the winter blues!). Part of this celebration for many of us is the Easter holiday. Children, especially, anticipate it as a time of fun with lots of goodies! Here are some activities that kids of all ages can enjoy!

Easter Egg Treasure Hunt - A traditional holiday game for the kids is the Easter egg hunt, but sometimes having big age differences amongst the kids can be a challenge. How do you hide eggs which will be both fair to the younger kids and challenging for their older siblings? The solution? Two egg hunts! The young ones can enjoy the traditional Easter egg hunt using small eggs (real or plastic), while you send the older kids on an Easter treasure hunt!

To begin the game, divide the older kids into two or three teams, (being careful to keep the ages within each team very diverse), and give each team a clue as to where they can find the first egg. Each egg they find will contain a clue for the location of the next egg. The last egg should contain a map which will lead the team to the room where the "treasure" is located.

Tips for a Successful Hunt

To manage the game better, each team can be given the color that matches their eggs. For instance, the blue team's clues will all be in blue eggs. In addition, make sure to use the large plastic eggs to distinguish them from those in the egg hunt for the younger kids.

For extra fun, include instructions to go back to the "game master" to do a "feats of fun" challenge to get the next clue. The "game master" (who can be a different adult for each challenge), will have the team do things such as: hop like a bunny for one minute, play the hokey pokey game or dare them to eat a plate full of (candy) worms.

To organize a successful game, make sure each team follows a different path to their treasure and that the eggs are well hidden. Decide what the treasure will be at the end of the hunt so that each child participating gets an adequate share. Filling little treasure chests (available at craft or party stores) with candy and real coins is a fun idea. To keep costs down, parents can donate candy, coins and toy prizes, and the treasure chest can be a decorated box or bag.

Bunny Bingo - Make bingo cards out of construction paper and holiday stickers for a fun game of bunny bingo.

Instructions

Using a marker, divide the paper into sixteen even squares (four across and four down), then place a sticker in each square.

With a second set of the same stickers, cut out squares from index cards, place a sticker inside each one and place squares inside of a hat.

Pull out squares one at a time from the hat and call out to the group. Rather than a letter and number, like in traditional bingo, you call out the picture ("pink bunny!").

The children who have matches can use jelly beans as the marker, and the first one to cover four squares in a row wins! This game can be fun for all ages and using bright pictures allows the little ones to play too! There are sure to be lots of winners!

Easter Bonnet Decorating Contest - This is a relay race to decorate the bonnet being worn by mom, grandma, dad or grandpa! You'll need a few straw hats, lots of adhesive Velcro and lots of lightweight decorations such as plastic eggs and plastic flowers. Here's what you do:

First tape the Velcro to the bonnet (adhesive side down) and cover as much of the hat as possible. To make sure it is secure, you can use paper clips on the straw hat. (If you decided to use a bonnet made of other material including cloth, you can sew on the Velcro.)

Next, use the adhesive side to tape small Velcro sections to the decorations which will go on the bonnet. (You can use almost anything as long as the Velcro can sustain its weight.)

Put an even number of items for decoration into two boxes or Easter baskets and place at the relay starting line. The person wearing the bonnet sits at the finish line.

Each team lines up behind their basket of decorations and at the start of the race, picks up one decoration, races to their bonnet and sticks the item on it. They then race back to the starting line where they tag the next person who is waiting for their turn to go. The team that is able to decorate the bonnet first, with all items from basket, is the winner. Of course, pictures of the bonnet wearer are a must!

"Hot Egg" - This is the Easter version of Hot Potato. Place the kids in a circle and use a plastic egg to toss around while the music plays. When the music stops, the one holding the egg is out.

Cookies and a Story - Have the kids gather around for an Easter bunny story and give each child a large cookie shaped like a bunny (or just a couple of smaller cookies). The kids must listen carefully since they are only allowed to take a bite when they hear the word "bunny" in the story!

Have a happy and safe holiday!

Recipes and Fun Activities For Easter

Image : http://www.flickr.com

It's that time of year again when daffodils will soon be in bloom, trees will be budding, and a lot of folks will be anxious to get out and work in their flower beds. It's called spring! And with spring comes the Easter bunny. An exciting and fun time for both kids and parents.

My all-time favorite Easter candy were those marshmallow peeps. Every spring (to this day), I indulge in a package or two. I love them so.

There are lots of fun activities for kids on this special spring holiday. Go beyond egg decorating and help your little ones decorate cute things for the house. Maybe some homemade crayola pictures to display in the windows or perhaps create an Easter tree. Egg relays are a lot of fun as well. You know the game with the egg and the spoon where teams are paired up and the winners are the ones who carries the eggs from point A to point B? This game can be mixed with children and parents for even more fun!

Cookie decorating can be a fun activity too. Bake the cookies ahead of time and make them in all shapes. Egg shaped, bunny shaped, or anything you wish. Make sure you have plenty of pastel food coloring for the frosting along with lots of sprinkles. Another cool idea...have your kids help you prepare the Easter meal. Put a special, homemade apron on them and they will feel like a real chef. It's pretty much tradition to prepare a ham for the meal. But what can you make as side dishes and desserts?

Let's explore a couple of ideas...

Easter Cupcakes

Ingredients

(for basic cake recipe-about 12 cupcakes)

1/2 cup butter or margarine
1 cup self rising flour
1/2 cup sugar
2 tbs milk
2 large eggs
12 Easter-themed cupcake liners
frosting
food coloring
sprinkles
cupcake or muffin pan
small chocolate bunnies

Directions

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. With a wooden spoon, mix the butter and sugar together until smooth, ( about 2 min). Add the eggs and milk and stir thoroughly.

Gently fold in the flour and mix until completely blended. Divide the batter evenly into the cupcake liners. Place the pan of cupcakes on a shelf just above the center for 15 minutes.

After cooled, frost the cupcakes in the color of your choice. The kids will have fun decorating the cupcakes with the sprinkles and the chocolate bunnies.

Family's Favorite Potato Salad

Ingredients

2 lb small red potatoes, unpeeled
6 eggs
3 celery stalks
1/4 cup finely diced red onion

For Dressing:

1/2 cup mayonnaise
1 tablespoon mustard seeds
1 green onion, including the tender green tops, finely chopped
1/4 cup finely chopped fresh parsley
1 teaspoon dry mustard
salt and pepper to taste

Directions

Boil the potatoes and eggs. I always put them in the fridge overnight to prevent the potato salad from turning out mushy. Peel the potatoes and the eggs and cut into small chunks and toss them into a large bowl. Add the celery and red onion and toss briefly to mix. Set aside.

For Dressing: In a small bowl and using a fork, stir together the mayonnaise, mustard seeds, green onion, parsley, dry mustard, salt and pepper, mixing well. Pour the dressing over the potato and egg mixture and mix well.

For best flavor, cover and chill for up to 2 hours before serving. Sprinkle the parsley over the top and serve.

Extra Family Activity

With today's global economic conditions...there are many children and families in need. Why not make up some special baskets that you can donate? This is something that kids can help with as well. You will be putting smiles on many faces. Share the joy of giving this Easter.

Children's Activities - Two Activities to Have Fun With Your Kids

Image : http://www.flickr.com

In this article I will recommend two activities which you can employ and have as fun as possible with your children. I found them searching online and I changed them a little bit to fit my personal standards. Keep reading.

Children's activity #1: Creating hats from paper board.

For this activity for children you will need scissors, colors, and colored paper board. First you must cut the paper board to the shape of the hat. You can also make a crown instead. You can find printable designs online but you can always draw your own hat. Then let the children cut the paper board hats. Urge them to start drawing on the hats. You can also use glue to stick small beads on the hat or crown. After the drawing is over add the finishing touch by sticking the two sides of the paper board together to form the hat. Next, children can wear the hats and have fun switching hats and running here and there. When they are finished ask them to help you clean the mess. Children will just love this activity!

Children's activity #2: Painting Easter Eggs

You can use this activity during Easter when you paint the eggs (usually red). If children like it then you can do many times a year. This is actually a Christian custom. I changed a little bit and I let my children draw on the eggs instead of painting them with one color. You will need eggs, acrylic paints and brushes. First of all boil the eggs. Let them cool down. Then gather the paints and brushes to the playground and let your kids draw happy faces on the eggs or just pick their own theme. Let the color dry. In the next step children play with the eggs hitting them to one another to find out which one is the strongest. The eggs that brake can be eaten. They will just love this part. Your children's activity is over. Clean up the up the mess with the help of your kids.

The above mentioned children's activities are just a sample of the thousands activity-recommendations you can find on the world wide web. I usually search for packs of printable craft and activity templates. I also invest money in buying these templates and then I re-model them to fit my children's needs and my own. I keep having fun with my children using new ideas. I wish you all the fun you can get with your kids.

Fun Easter Activities For Kids

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The lead up to Easter is an exciting time for kids so you may want some fun Easter activities to keep them busy, happy and settled in this exciting time. There are loads of activities that you do with kids that are not only fun but are also educational. When you choose Easter activities for kids at home or at school, you may as well choose something that will not just let them have fun but it will also help them to learn and grow.

There are many, many worthwhile craft Easter activities for kids of all ages. Design an Easter card or get creative with eggs. Try painting eggs, dyeing eggs or even making picture with crushed dyed, crushed egg shells. Decorating egg shapes is also a great Easter activity for kids of all ages. Just cut out an egg shape from card and the kids can cover it with bands of bright, colorful, crumpled pieces of paper. Kids can also be encouraged to decorate an egg shape with bands of patterns and to keep the patterns symmetrical.

One of the few craft activities that I remember doing myself as a child was actually done after Easter as we needed the beautiful, foil paper that the Easter eggs are wrapped in. We glued pieces of paper all over a jar to cover the outside of the entire jar. We then varnished it when it was dry and the result was a really beautiful jar that could be used for any purpose. This special Easter activity for kids to do after Easter is wonderful way to encourage recycling of jars and Easter egg wrappers.

Once you have tried some craft with the kids there are also loads of puzzles and games that can be tried. Why not make your own Easter board game? The kids can enjoy making the game board and inventing the game and then afterwards they can enjoy actually playing the game. This Easter activity will also bring out their creative side.

Easter Bingo is another fun Easter activity for kids to play again and again. They can make their own bingo cards with Easter words and then play Easter bingo with the cards. The caller can have all of the words on small cards and draw them out one by one.

Next try an Easter puzzle. One that is really simple is to organize is an Easter Bunny Word Scramble. Use the words 'Easter Bunny' or the word 'Chocolate'.

Give each person a pencil and paper and have them write either 'Easter Bunny' or 'Chocolate'. They then write down as many words as they can think of that can be made using the letters contained in the words 'Easter bunny' or 'Chocolate'.

A prize is given to the person who comes up with the most words and also to the person who has the longest word. Off course the best prize for this game is a Chocolate Easter Egg or Easter Bunny!

Another great Easter puzzle is to make your own word search filled with Easter words. The kids can also practice their spelling skills by playing Hangman with Easter words. You might like to change the Hangman to something with an Easter theme like a bunny or an Easter basket.

Well I hope this has given you loads and loads of ideas for Easter Activities for kids. Happy Easter!

Easter Traditions & Activities - 10 Fun & Meaningful Ideas For Families

Image : http://www.flickr.com

What is Easter, and what are we celebrating on this holiday? As the first syllable of the very word 'holiday' suggests - it is a Holy day. Is there anything necessarily wrong with painting eggs, Easter egg hunts, bunnies, or chocolate? Absolutely not! In fact, such activities often accomplish the very goal of Who it is we celebrate and recognize on this Holy day - the goal of being with and strengthening family relationships. However, much like the majority of holidays, it is certainly easy to get caught up in the commercialization and symbolism of the celebration and forget why, what, and Who the symbols were originally intended to represent. Should Easter be fun? Of course! Should we color eggs, hide candy, and eat a lot of chocolate? Absolutely! But should we not also ensure that it is a Holy day where we think of, learn about, and seek to follow the very Symbol of this Holy day - the Savior Himself. He is the purpose of the holiday, hence the reason it must also be a Holy day.

Below are listed 10 fun and meaningful activity ideas for families and individuals everywhere that will help make Easter fun, memorable, and Holy.

1) Make it Holy-day: Spend at least a few minutes reflecting upon, learning more about, and expressing gratitude for the very reason and Person we celebrate on this Holy-day.

2) Give Easter to a Family in Need: Find a family who may be struggling or who has very little, and make it a memorable and special day for them. Make an Easter Basket for them - buy or make them a gift, a meal, get some chocolate and candies for the kids, etc.

3) Easter Egg Hunt: What would Easter be without one, right?

4) Dying Eggs: Hard broil some eggs, get some food coloring, and color Easter eggs together as a family. (Draw on the eggs with a white crayon before dying them to create designs).

5) Symbolism of Easter: Spend a few minutes each year learning about the symbolic nature of the colors, dying eggs, traditions, rolling eggs, Easter bunny, etc. What do these things really symbolize and represent.

6) Visit Graves: Go to the graves of family or friends and talk about death, as well as the Resurrection.

7) Decorations: Like any holiday, decorate the house (inside and out) with Easter decorations.

8) Worship Service and Scriptural Readings: Attend a religious service, participate in the Passover traditions and activities, read scriptural passages from the Bible, etc.

9) Meaningful Easter Egg Hunt: In addition to hiding candies in the Eggs, hide scriptural passages inside some eggs. Then, as the kids eat candies, read some of the scriptural passages and remember the significance of the day and holiday.

10) Family Day: Just spend time as a family together. Share a meal, play games together, and enjoy just being as a family.

Free Ideas For Activities With Your Kids

Image : http://www.flickr.com

It seems like kids constantly need to be entertained. We live in culture that moves quickly, offers tons of diversion, and requires us to keep us on the go. So when you are sitting at home with the kids, it can sometimes be difficult to decide what to do with them to keep them entertained.

The old stand-by is the television. Unfortunately, while it can make a great "babysitter" for a short time, in a pinch, we usually do not want our kids to grow up zoned out in front of the TV.

The best thing we can do with our kids, is PLAY with them ourselves.

Obviously the age of your child(ren) drives what you can do. But it is easy to get stuck in a rut. Playing with them takes work, usually, and it is much easier to plop them down in front of the "idiot box" (as my late grandfather used to call it). However, if you have a list of ideas that you keep handy, it will help you remember that there are other options.

For example, my kids love to play hide-and-seek. It costs nothing, takes no effort to setup, and can be played for as long or as short as we want. Frequently we will just start counting really loudly, and they know to go hide. Tag also works well if you have enough, although it tends to be a little rowdy for indoor play.

Here are a few ideas, for both indoor and outdoor play that is free and easy!

Indoor:

- play a board game (age appropriate) or card game
- hide-and seek
- color with them. You can find tons of free coloring pages online that you can print out
- play charades, adjusting the rules to fit their ages.
- "Easter egg hunt", with anything besides Easter eggs. Take a deck of cards and hide them around the house, or a handful of their favorite toys or dolls. Use the "getting warmer, getting colder" method of helping them
- Tell a story, making it up as you go. Start an adventurous story, and then ask them for a word to fill in, and customize the story from there. Like, "Once upon a time, there lived a princess, who had a very special..." (ask one child what the princess might have had) They might say something like "DRESS!" "Ok....she had a special dress, and whenever she wore it, she was able to..." (ask the next child) "Shoot lasers from her eyes!" (that would be my son). You get the idea. Continue the story, and keep asking for input from the kids.
- Build a fort from sofa cushions and blankets and have rubber-band wars

Outdoor:

- tag
- hide-and-seek
- Frisbee
- Outdoor "Easter egg hunt" (again, using whatever you want)
- Chalk-draw on the sidewalk or driveway
- Throw a ball

There are so many things that we, as parents, can do that are fun for us and the kids, but, more importantly, are interactive with the kids. (Any parenting guru will tell you that interacting with the children via a game is so much better than having them watch TV.) Sometimes we just need to have someone else give us ideas to help.
